The world’s ’50 Best’ hotels for 2024 have been crowned, with two stunning Aussie properties featuring in the list.
Holding on to its title as the best hotel in Australia (in fact, in all of Oceania), was The Calile hotel in Brisbane. Though it did drop a few places from 12th last year, to 25th overall this year.
Also making this year’s top 50 was The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in Hobart, landing in 49th spot.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels list is created by The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy, an influential group of more than 580 independent leaders overseen by a group of nine industry-leading Academy Chairs.
Each voter is selected for their expert opinion of the international hotel scene, a mix of hoteliers, travel journalists, educators, and seasoned luxury travellers.
Capella Bangkok, overlooking Thailand’s majestic Chao Phraya River, has been named the best hotel in the world for 2024. It climbed 10 places from No.11 in the 2023 list.

In second spot was Passalacqua (number 1 last year), set in an 18th-century villa amongst spectacular terraced gardens on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como.
And in third place was the towering Rosewood Hong Kong, in the city’s Victoria Dockside arts and design district.
The Calile is the centrepiece of the sleek James Street precinct, a leafy oasis in the centre of Brisbane that’s upping the city’s design and dining credentials at a rapid pace.
Designed by Brisbane-based architects Richards & Spence, the hotel riffs on modernist Miami and Palm Springs while also nodding to the design stylings of 1960s Australia.
The centrepiece is the pool deck with its sage green umbrellas, cabanas and 30-metre pool with the hotel’s name spelled out in gold tiles.

Centrally located on Hobart’s iconic waterfront, The Tasman is an elegant heritage reconstruction of former state government offices that offers guest rooms and suites carefully conceived to showcase the architectural narrative of the site.
“Tasmania has long been a jewel in Australia’s crown as a place to experience natural and epicurean delights, and fabulous warm friendly hospitality,” Stephen Morahan, The Tasman Hotel General Manager, said.
“The Tasman embodies these experiences and to be celebrated on the world’s stage is not only a testament to our offerings but those of the entire state.”
